MATERNITY

Gore Hospital has a modern, comfortable primary maternity unit, comprising of birthing room, lounge and two twin bedrooms both with ensuite.  We have self employed Independent Midwives operating within the unit who are supported by our team of Gore Health Registered and Enrolled Nurses. We have around 80-100 births a year in our maternity unit.  Our maternity service has attained "BFHI" accreditation which actively promotes and supports exclusive breasfeeding from birth.  For more information on the BFHI initiative visit the New Zealand Breastfeeding Authority website: www.babyfriendly.org.nz.

Our maternity unit offers the following primary services:

  • labour and delivery services
  • postnatal care within the hospital
  • support with breastfeeding

Visiting hours are between 2pm and 8pm but are flexible for family members.  We ask that visitors respect these times for mother and bably to rest.

Independent Midwives

As mentioned above we have self employed Independent Midwives providing maternity services within our maternity unit.  They provide continuity of care for the wormen of Eastern and Northern Southland and West Otago from pre-conception through pregnancy, birth and after baby is born.  The services they offer include:

  • free pregnancy testing
  • pre-conception advice
  • pregnancy care and education
  • labour and birth support
  • postnatal care

They work closely with specialists at Southland Hospital and are able to contact them around the clock to get the best outcome for mother and baby.  Listed below are the Independent Midwives who work in our community and their contact phone numbers:
