Mobile Surgical Services

The Mobile Surgical Bus visits Gore Hospital and other rural hospitals throughout New Zealand every six weeks to carry out minor low risk elective day surgery procedures.  This allows patients to access minor surgical services in their own communities rather than having to travel to base hospitals for surgery.

At Gore Hospital currently, minor dental procedures are carried out on the Mobile Surgical Bus.  The bus sides extend to become a fully equipped mobile operating theatre.  In recent years around 70-80 minor surgical procedures per year have been performed on the Mobile Surgical Bus.

Mobile Surgical Services staff, specialists from either Dunedin or Invercargill, and members of the Gore Health nursing team work together to provide services on the bus. The bus usually takes around one hour to set up for surgery and is hooked up to the hospital for power, water suppply, waste water and computer data lines.
