The Gore district is home to around 13,000 people, with the two main towns being Gore and Mataura. Gore is the commercial centre for a rich agricultural area and Mataura is home to the Alliance meat processing plant. Farming, rural services, foresty, meat and dairy processing, together with MDF and tourism are the district's major industries. The region is also the third largest coal producer in the country with significant deposits of lignite in Eastern Southland. |
